By Paul Birch, Senior Science Technician; IVC
In 2007, IVC pupils from all years took part in a Science Club rocket building contest. Rockets were constructed from household waste materials and then engines were installed based on black powder (old fashioned “gunpowder”). The rockets were launched on the school field. All rockets flew very well, though some of the landings were a little bumpy, as parachutes weren’t used!
An excellent example of chemical reactions in action – and good use of recycled materials (spent rockets were recycled again, after flying – except the one on display)!
