Chivers Gift

Exhibition Piece: A plaque in remembrance of John Chivers (1857-1929) by his family, and to acknowledge their gift of land, property and money for Impington Village College to be constructed. Without this generous donation, the activities of the students and community would not occur.

In 1939 the directors of Chivers and Sons Ltd provided the adult wing for residents in the parishes served by Impington Village College.  The gift comprised the library, the common room, the lecture room and the various recreation rooms.

Before the adult wing was constructed, activities like playing snooker and table tennis used to occur at the Histon Institute on the village green.  This had previously been a chapel, so when the Chivers bought it, they converted the building to suit the social purpose they required.  The family were strong advocates of supporting and encouraging their workers in recreational pastimes.  Then, when the plans came in for the Village College at Impington, the Chivers generously donated an additional £6,000 for the adult wing to be built.  This meant that all the previous activities conducted at the institute, moved directly to the college.

Impington has always enjoyed a vibrant programme of classes and activities for adults to enjoy.  In the 1970s the programme was particularly large as can be seen from this list of members of the Association of Adult Classes, Clubs and Societies in 1977.
